The most recent Eye on a Crazy Planet poll asked which is the best Canadian Rock/pop group or musician of all time. Included were Anne Murray, Blue Rodeo, Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion and others, but in the finally tally, it was a tie between The Guess Who and Gordon Lightfoot.
So in honor of the winners we proudly present:
Everyone who responded to this poll is obviously wrong or stupid. Leonard Cohen is the only Canadian who matters and isn't Neil Young.
ReplyDeleteThe Guess Who were categorically awful and Lightfoot hasn't done much of anything relevant since the 70s that wasn't almost dying.
Christ on a cracker, I'm shocked that Max Webster didn't win.
Neil Young should have made the list, so should Joni Mitchell. But as far as not doing anything since the 70's I'm hard pressed to think of a great album from either of those two since then.
ReplyDeleteOscar Peterson and Moe Kaufman were in the Jazz category so they weren't listed.
Lightfoot is without question one of our greats though. His body of work from the early 60's to the late 70's is incredible.
And The Guess Who? Well, it's music, so everyone has their own taste. Although if you ask people what the best song is from a Canadian group, American Woman usually places at or near the top of that list.
Actually, that would be a pretty good poll for the future.
And Max Webster... I have to confess, I think my favorite Canadian video is "Might as Well Go for a Soda." Was that Kim Mitchell as Kim mitchell or Max Webster?
I dunno, Young's Freedom and Ragged Glory from the late 80s and early 90s were both really good records.
ReplyDelete"Go for a Soda" was from Mitchell's first solo album.
I'm just thrilled that Rush isn't mentioned anywhere in this post.
