Qatar withdraws bid to usurp headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) from Montréal

May 24, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, Jean-François Lisée, Quebec’s Minister of International Relations, La Francophonie and External Trade (and Minister Responsible for the Montréal Region), and Michael Applebaum, Mayor of Montréal, are pleased to learn that the State of Qatar has withdrawn its bid to move the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) from Montréal.

    I seem to remember reading that Toronto was once considered for the UN headquarters. Thank god that never happened.

  2. Good riddance. I used to work for IATA, another international aerospace organization based in Montreal. They are given enormous tax breaks (and staff are tax-free) based on the fact that their HQ is there. The reality is that the executives behind IATA all live/work in Geneva and keep empty officers in Montreal to fake that it's the HQ....
