...“They were human beings in Gaza,” the audience member said.
“Yes, they were,” (Bill) Clinton said. “And Hamas is really smart. When they decide to rocket Israel, they insinuate themselves in the hospitals, in the schools, in the highly populous areas, and they are smart.”
The line prompted applause, and he continued: “They said they try to put the Israelis in a position of either not defending themselves or killing innocents. They’re good at it. They’re smart. They’ve been doing this a long time.”

Clinton's choice of the word "killed" probably isn't apt.
ReplyDeleteThere's a specter out there hanging over any leader that is contemplating a general peace with Israel; Anwar Sadat. He made a deal and it didn't end exceptionally well for him.
Both sides have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity, but the consequences have tended to be worse for Israel. Because it held out for so long in dealing with Arafat, Hezbollah and Hamas rose to undermine him and further challenge Jerusalem. As you might imagine, that could be a problem.
Worse, it's a problem that shows no indication of easing up. Israel hasn't managed to decimate Hezbollah, but ISIS and Assad have been doing good work of it. Now there's a very real possibility that ISIS (and/or al Nusra) will be on Israel's border and become its new "peace partner."
The longer this goes on, the bleaker it gets.
