Before "The Cat in the Hat," Dr. Seuss' raunchy WW2 cartoons

The recent publication of a long-lost children’s book by Dr. Seuss got a lot of attention — but few of his fans know that as Army Capt. Theodor Geisel during World War II, he scripted a series of raunchy adult cartoons designed strictly for military audiences.

Produced by Oscar-winning director Frank Capra (“It’s a Wonderful Life’’) and directed by legendary Warner Bros. animators, these 70-year-old cartoons will be making their belated TV debut as part of a series on wartime propaganda and training films, airing every Tuesday night in September on Turner Classic Movies...
