University education is supposed to be about exploring and discussing ideas. At York University, it's about suppressing them if they don't conform to their hypocritical concepts of political correctness:

"Funny is the world I live in. You’re funny, I’m interested. You’re not funny, I’m not interested. I have no interest in gender or race or anything like that. But everyone else is kind of, with their calculating — is this the exact right mix? I think that’s — to me it’s anti-comedy. It’s more about PC-nonsense."

Along with her mother, Ms. Power said she approached the sensei with her concerns about the new environment, but was told that it was the student’s religious right. “[The sensei] told us to get used to it,” said Michele Walsh, Ms. Power’ mother.

Aiming to complete her training, Ms. Power nevertheless stayed in the school for another five months, but said her breaking point came when the male student began distributing religious literature.

In July of 2012, said Ms. Power, the student handed out copies of Islam; From darkness to light a booklet written by Toronto-based Islamic author Suhail Kapoor.

Several passages stuck out for the 15-year-old. “[When] a woman chooses to show her body in one form or another, the message is only one: she wants attention and possibly much more,” it reads. The booklet also authorizes husbands to administer a “light strike” to their wives in cases of “serious moral misconduct.”

Whether Muslims can be homophobic makes TDSB heads explode, because they can't process an equation where two groups whose TDSB identity is wrapped entirely in victimhood come into conflict.

Genderism: the belief that the binary construct of gender, in which there are only two genders (male and female), is the most normal, natural and preferred gender identity. This binary construct does not include or allow for people to be intersex, transgendered, transsexual or genderqueer. 

But why worry? After all the TDSB is run with a degree of incompetence that suggests corruption, it'll probably be bankrupt in a few years anyway.

Canada's version of academic freedom: Queen's University cancels free speech

On the night of April 2, 2013 Queen's University administration and student union officials ordered the removal of a free speech display at the university. However, they did not only remove the canvas upon which students expressed their opinions. Campus security took the canvas and refused to return it to its owners, members of the Queen's Students for Liberty. This video shows the sequence of events.

Queen's Students for Liberty had booked a space in the John Deutsch University Centre for its "wall" - a blank space upon which students were encouraged to express themselves. 

Some of the roughly 50 entries on the canvas, however, were deemed offensive by the school's Alma Mater Society, according to the student group, and school security removed the exhibit Tuesday evening.

University officials are expected to comment on the details later this afternoon, but have so far not said what on the wall was found to be offensive.

The Students for Liberty argued that nothing there violated Canadian law, and that the act of dismantling the exhibit is the worse crime.

"I am dismayed with the gross violation of free speech that we saw committed by Queen's last night" Jeffrey Waligun, president of the group, said in a release Wednesday. "It is one thing for a lone hooligan to vandalize a display ... It is far more disturbing when the university itself becomes the hooligan."

A straight student named Cody Boast who attended a campus Pride event to show solidarity with Gay students was told to change his clothes because he was "wearing too much pink."

Boast, who identifies as heterosexual, says he was there only to show support for the LGBTQ community, and was surprised that the incident occurred; nonetheless, he heeded Hammett’s orders.  

“I didn’t want to fight with her, so I changed,” said Boast.  

“[She told me] it’s like dressing up like Bob Marley at a Black History Month event,” he continued.

Marginalized and on the defensive, university conservatives forced to grow tougher

Of the many young stereotypes who wander the quadrangles of Canadian universities — the anguished poet, the math nerd, the charity cheerleader, the stoned philosopher — few seem as awkwardly marginalized as the campus conservative.

A bow tie among scarves, he affects an intellectual style that befits an older, wiser man. He is the inverse of the ageing hippie. Beset on all sides by people who put the liberal into liberal arts, he is counter cultural in a way the average starry-eyed proto-socialist can only dream of, and when he grows up and enters the real world, its toughness comes as a validation.

But what happens when the conservative stays within the academy, and tries to change it from inside?

The Toronto Star and The Catholic School Board would benefit from an English Comprehension Course

Self-beclowning, manufactured outrage against popular Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is the Toronto Star's core purpose as a media outlet these days. At least that's how it seems, and the latest bout of idiocy from al Starzeera does nothing to dispel that impression.

In fairness to The Star's angry, self-proclaimed "progressives" this time they had some help from some intelligence-impaired staff and parents in Toronto's Catholic School Board.

The Star reports that the co-chair of Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School received an anonymous letter from a significant number of staff and the school council decided to hold a special meeting about an interview Ford gave with Sun TV's David Menzies.

In the interview (see video below) Ford describes how the football program is helping to save the lives of the players by giving them a positive outlet.

“It’s such a negative thing, what he’s saying, and it’s so untrue. For him to say that unless they play football their life is shot is so untrue. So untrue. We appreciate that he volunteers at the school; we appreciate the time he puts in for the football program. But not if he’s going to speak the way he’s speaking. We’d be better off without him as the football coach if he continues to speak this way. . . This has to stop.” 

Board spokesperson John Yan said the interview contained “a number of inaccuracies,” which he would not specifically identify. In general, Yan said, “the interview is an inaccurate portrayal of the community.”

The problem with the characterization from Don Bosco's School Council and the Catholic Board is that  Ford explicitly said he uses football as an incentive to get the kids to attend their classes and maintain good grades.

As the Star acknowledged,  Ford said, “You can’t tell them to get an education. But I use the football as a carrot. I said: If you don’t go to school, and you’re (not) passing, you don’t play football. Oh, they’ll do backflips to play football.”

It would seem apparent that if Ford felt Don Bosco was providing a terrible education, he wouldn't be demanding his players attend classes with the obvious (to anyone other than a School Board official) implication being that education is the key to their success in life.

But part of the problem for the Don Bosco School (i.e. Parents) Council is that they didn't like the implied  depiction of their community as crime-ridden and underprivileged.

There's only one problem with their outrage. Don Bosco's community IS crime-ridden and underprivileged.

But God forbid that a politician actually tell the truth about something!  If only they had a mayor who was a member of the Liberal Party or NDP, they would have a representative with the good sense to lie to their faces.

Unfortunately, Ford is someone who calls things as he sees them.

Which really upsets the mushy heads at The Toronto Star.

Ministers agreed to scrap a law outlawing ‘insulting words or behaviour’ last night after a campaign led by comedian Rowan Atkinson. 

Home Secretary Theresa May announced a dramatic U-turn yesterday saying the government would ditch the contentious words from the Public Order Act amid fears that they are strangling free speech.   

The Blackadder and Mr Bean star led a coalition of campaign groups complaining that the legislation has been abused by over-zealous police and prosecutors to arrest Christian preachers, critics of Scientology, gay rights campaigners and even students making jokes.

Skippy Stalin's thoughts on Django Unchained

I saw Quentin Tarantino's latest last week and thought it was a pretty good movie, though perhaps a trifle longer than it needed to be.

As to the controversy it's engendered, Skippy Stalin over at Postcards of the Hanging has said everything I was thinking, so his words will do very well:

Django Unchained is a flick that I can't pass up writing about because it does the one thing I look for most most in life: It reaffirms my faith in human stupidity. The things in modern society that make people almost reflexively dumb have always been my favorite and always will be. That's, as the kids say, just how I roll. 

When I heard that Quentin Tarantino's next project would be a spaghetti western set in the antebellum slavery era, I knew that the world's worst people would be set of into fits of apoplectic shitheadery. The buzz in the week or so prior to the movie's release confirmed that. All the right people were getting powerfully indignant, which made Django Unchained a "must see" for me. 

Much has been written about Django Unchained and almost all of it misses the point. Instead of critiquing the film like a normal human being would, every half-wit in Christendom has used it to espouse their own moronic political perspectives, which goes a long way in proving that people who see politics in everything should probably be buried alive.

Another sign the west is dying - Canada's military punished for making fun of the enemy

Canadian soldiers are sent to risk their lives in Afghanistan, many of them having been killed in the line of duty, to fight the Taliban and al Qaida there. But God help our soldiers if they have the temerity to mock the enemies they have been sent to kill! That would be culturally insensitive and deeply offensive to the politically-correct thought totalitarians at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

While sipping vintage champagne at overpriced hotels on the taxpayers' dime, the superior beings at the CBC who are tasked with deciding how the less enlightened hoi polloi should think must have been tut-tutting like a cuckoo upon hearing that Canadian soldiers are parodying the enemies with whom they are at war.

Exploding in outrage, the CBC has railed to the point where a contrite Canadian military is conducting an investigation of the offense of offending those who identify with Osama bin Laden.

While this sounds too absurd to be taken seriously, the signs that such stupidity would compel our government into abasement before the cultural engineers were abundant. Only last week we heard of the  suspension of Queen's University professor Michael Mason for using phrases heard during the time of the Second World War to illustrate attitudes at the time. He wasn't endorsing them but informing his students of examples.

There is a war, not only of arms but of of values being fought between the west and Islamist forces. The most basic value we claim distinguishes us from our enemies is that we claim to represent "freedom" and the most essential principles of that freedom being free speech.

Yet when we see how those who have the power to affect others in our society act and overreact to incidents where they are or are expected to be offended by free speech, something horrifying becomes apparent. Our leaders talk about freedom but not only do they not believe in it, they are working against it.

If we continue along this path we will become just like the enemies we claim are our inferiors. When that happens, we will lose to them because they are unencumbered by the same idiotic concerns about offending others. They teach their children to hate us, to kill us and to take joy in so doing. They are more determined than we are and unless, as a society, we wake up, we are destined to defeat to a culture that will have no qualms about imposing its values on us and killing those who don't accept them.

And if you don't believe that, try walking around as a woman without your head covered in Iran, as a Gay man kissing another Gay man on the lips there, as a Baha'i praising your own religion, or anyone speaking out against the Supreme Ayatollah.

Maybe that last example came too late. Now in Canada if you are in the military and dare to so much as mock an Ayatollah, you could end up on charges.

Politically correct sociologists outraged at study of Gay parents

Homosexuality is a natural facet of animal behavior in some circumstances, and the obvious reason that it occurs in nature is for population reduction.

I support Gay marriage, but it really is no shock that children have worse outcomes being raised by same-sex partners than by two biological parents.

But don't ever dare say that in public, or a storm of outraged, politically-correct, substandard academics will bay like wolves.
