Over-accomodation in Canada will eventually crush equaility of the sexes

Along with her mother, Ms. Power said she approached the sensei with her concerns about the new environment, but was told that it was the student’s religious right. “[The sensei] told us to get used to it,” said Michele Walsh, Ms. Power’ mother.

Aiming to complete her training, Ms. Power nevertheless stayed in the school for another five months, but said her breaking point came when the male student began distributing religious literature.

In July of 2012, said Ms. Power, the student handed out copies of Islam; From darkness to light a booklet written by Toronto-based Islamic author Suhail Kapoor.

Several passages stuck out for the 15-year-old. “[When] a woman chooses to show her body in one form or another, the message is only one: she wants attention and possibly much more,” it reads. The booklet also authorizes husbands to administer a “light strike” to their wives in cases of “serious moral misconduct.”

York University doubles down on its stupidity

You might think that if you choose to live in a country, it's reasonable to expect to have to adapt to its values, laws and culture.

Nope! At least not at Toronto's academic joke, York University.

There, in order to accommodate a request from a student who doesn't want to be around women "for religious reasons" the University capitulated and wants to allow him to do an assignment without any women around. Now I suppose I could see the point if the women came in to the exam looking like this:

But as it's York U, I'd be ready to bet they're more likely to look like this:

By the logic York is using, a student could refuse to attend class with other students because they are Gay or Jews or any number of criteria which violate the basic tenets of Canadian equity and fairness.

I'm also surprised that no one seems to have raised the obvious question of how the Sociology student in question could ever function effectively in his field if he is unwilling to interact with women.

At least it's encouraging that even NDP leader Thomas Mulcair is pushing back against this latest bit of civilizational suicide, saying, "I don't think a university should be accommodating such a demand."

The Sapphires cover ain't racist or sexist - it's just normal movie marketing

A moronic tempest in a teapot has been whipped up over the cover of the recently released DVD for the movie The Sapphires.

The film is the based-on-a-true story account of a 1960's pop group made up of aboriginal women.

The brouhaha is all about the alleged "racism and sexism" of the photo on the cover having the women in the background with the movie's star Chris O'Dowd getting the most exposure.

Except it isn't racism or sexism. It's marketing. You always put the biggest name in the movie up front.

Chris O'Dowd may not have the fame of Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, but he is a well known star of such films as Bridesmaids and the current HBO hit series Family Tree.

The rest of the cast are complete unknowns.

The Sapphires cover controversy is not one sparked by racism but is more a case of narcissistic, self-serving, attention-seeking faux outrage. There are real instances of racism and sexism in the world. To diminish them with nonsense like this is as tiresome as it is facile.

So far bloggers such as Sassy Wire, Jay Currie, Blazing Cat Fur, Look What We Have Found,  and Five Feet of Fury have been engaging in a disgusting, sexist, gender-normative pin-up war!

Who could imagine that in these enlightened times prurient sexism could end up on the Internet!?!

Abu Dhabi's high court rules it's ok to beat your wife as long as you don't leave marks

I don't get why the middle east is so worked up about waterboarding. Evidently it's a perfectly acceptable means of settling domestic disputes in Abu Dhabi.

ABU DHABI // A man has the right to discipline his wife and children provided he does not leave physical marks, the Federal Supreme Court has ruled.

The judgment was made in the case of a man who slapped and kicked his daughter and slapped his wife. 

The wife suffered injuries to her lower lip and teeth, and the daughter had bruises on her right hand and right knee. The court ruled that the bruises were evidence that the father had abused his Sharia right.

According to Islamic law, a man has the "right to discipline" his wife and children, which can include beating them after he has exhausted two other options: admonition and then abstaining from sleeping with his wife.
