Guess what? According to the Criminal Code of Canada, Frank Miller's "Sin City" and just about every other violent graphic novel is illegal

I don't have a strong opinion on legalized prostitution one way or another. Victimless crimes are not something that I spend much time worrying about. So as long as the prostitute isn't underage, or a victim of sex traffickers or an abusive pimp (the punishment for whom I think spending decades in jail would be appropriate), and it's done in private and not on my street corner, I couldn't care less.

Having said that, the federal government has just proposed a bill to regulate prostitution that must be the most ridiculous and confusing crime bill in the history of Canada.

It makes the selling of sexual services legal, but not in public places where it remains illegal, and it makes all advertising and communication for the sale of sex illegal. But wait, it gets more confusing by making all purchasing of sexual services illegal.

So what that means is that the only way sex can legally be sold in Canada, other than the traditional way of marrying a rich husband, is if a prostitute, in a private location, telepathically realizes that the person they are with wants to buy sex, and removes the money from that client's wallet or purse without their knowledge.

Yeah, it's that preposterous.

But more worrisome, while reading through the proposed bill, was something I'd never heard of before with its references to the illegality of "crime comics."

The new prostitution bill refers to them as part of Section 163 of the Criminal Code, so I went and looked it up and here is the relevant section:

Corrupting morals

• 163. (1) Every one commits an offence who
  • (a) makes, prints, publishes, distributes, circulates, or has in his possession for the purpose of publication, distribution or circulation any obscene written matter, picture, model, phonograph record or other thing whatever; or
  • (b) makes, prints, publishes, distributes, sells or has in his possession for the purpose of publication, distribution or circulation a crime comic...

• Motives irrelevant

  (5) For the purposes of this section, the motives of an accused are irrelevant.
• (6) [Repealed, 1993, c. 46, s. 1]
• Definition of “crime comic”
  (7) In this section, “crime comic” means a magazine, periodical or book that exclusively or substantially comprises matter depicting pictorially
  • (a) the commission of crimes, real or fictitious; or
  • (b) events connected with the commission of crimes, real or fictitious, whether occurring before or after the commission of the crime.

• Marginal note:Obscene publication

  (8) For the purposes of this Act, any publication a dominant characteristic of which is the undue exploitation of sex, or of sex and any one or more of the following subjects, namely, crime, horror, cruelty and violence, shall be deemed to be obscene.

That is just about the most subjective, preposterous and unenforcable law I've ever read.

What exactly is "undue" exploitation of sex, crime, horror, cruelty and violence, as opposed to say, the amount that the government and courts would consider "due"???

This law seemingly makes graphic novels like Frank Miller's Sin City series, which is both brilliantly creative and rife with all those elements in extreme and egregious amounts, illegal in Canada. The same might be said for HBO's wildly popular Game of Thrones. Are we going to see RCMP raids on Chapters/Indigo bookstores now? The library at my son's high school is filled with Japanese Manga graphic novels which would easily be considered illegal by the Criminal Code's definition. Does that mean that we can expect a mass arrest of the leadership of the Toronto District School Board?  As appealing as that prospect may be considering the other forms of child abuse the TDSB perpetrates, jailing them for stocking school libraries with "crime comics" is absurd.

It's understandable, and even laudable that the government would want to discourage prostitution. But the new bill by which it is attempting to achieve that goal is obviously a predestined failure. Even more significantly, the silly new bill highlights an urgent need to get rid of the deadwood in Canada's legal system.

Every year, the Toronto District School Board publishes a Days of Significance Calendar for students. It includes the holidays of different religions and various UN mandated observances, such as the International Day of Families (May 15). 

The TDSB also included the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers on the Calendar.

Sex Workers’ Day is celebrated by prostitutes, strippers, porn actors, dominatrixes and, until this school year, by the Toronto District School Board. The day’s purpose is to“advocate for removal of all laws that criminalize sex work” and to remove all negative stigma so that prostitution becomes just one more career path....

Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto said his lack of sensitivity to America’s perception of prostitution might have caused outrage after his suggestion earlier this week that U.S. troops based in southern Japan should patronize legal adult entertainment establishments to reduce sex crime there.

Hashimoto, co-leader of an emerging nationalist party, also has angered Japan’s neighbours by saying the Japanese military’s wartime practice of forcing Asian women into prostitution was necessary to maintain discipline and provide relaxation for soldiers.

Toronto District School Board celebrates International Sex Workers’ Day

Given the type of education kids are getting at the Toronto District School Board, and their propensity towards promulgating graphic sexual material in classrooms,  "sex worker" may be one of the few career paths available to its graduating students.

Nonetheless, it is still somewhat disturbing and inappropriate that the TDSB is celebrating International Sex Workers Day.

You might find it odd that the Board thinks violence against sex workers is an issue school kids should worry about. I certainly do. I hope that for most of their school careers our kids won’t even know sex workers exist.    

The Board could choose to highlight all sorts of different days. For instance, National Library week was October 17 – 24 and National School Library Day was October 22.  But these don't make it onto the School Board’s Calendar. So why do sex workers rate and librarians don’t?

Amsterdam's red-light area: Legalising prostitution hasn't prevented organised crime

Amsterdam, often hailed as the sex mecca of Europe, is to have a major facelift. After 12 years of legalised window brothels, attracting hordes of customers from all over Europe, politicians, police, citizens and even many of the prostitutes themselves are admitting that state-sanctioned prostitution is a failed social experiment. 

Given almost ten years of evidence that criminal gangs control the red-light area of De Wallen, the local council has announced plans to clean it up in an attempt to transform the reputation of the city. Out will go at least half of the window brothels, sex shops and cannabis cafés and in will come more museums, restaurants and art galleries.

The decline and fall of Toronto's strip clubs

Downtown Yonge Street in the mid-’70s was a much different scene than the gradually gentrifying shopping and restaurant strip we know today. It was a place where no self-respecting storefront went without a giant neon sign—flashing words like “nude,” “girls” and “XXX”—and where seediness was a simple fact of life. (See this map for proof.)

At the time, Yonge was home to countless so-called body-rub parlours, where the discerning gentleman could duck behind the street’s glittering facade for a quick massage, complete with happy ending. For do-it-yourselfers, the strip’s erotic movie houses screened the finest pornography the decade had to offer.

Interspersed were other businesses that offered comparatively simple pleasures. Places like Starvin Marvin’s (313 Yonge), Le Strip (237A Yonge) and Zanzibar (359 Yonge) featured nude or semi-nude stage shows. These clubs helped form the nucleus of an X-rated scene to rival anything in New York at the time. Even before the city had attained its current skyscrapery grandeur, Toronto’s sleaze was world class.

Almost 35 years later, Yonge Street has changed dramatically. Most of the seediest businesses are gone and the remaining strip clubs seem like stragglers living on borrowed time.

Another anti-Gay Republican legislator caught in a Gay sex scandal

This sort of thing seems to be a monthly occurrence..

Here’s how it reportedly went down: 64-year-old, married Indiana state representative, Phillip “Phil” Hinkle — who voted in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage — allegedly tried to procure an 18-year old male prostitute named Kameryn Gibson on the “men seeking men” section of Craigslist and then offered the young lad $80 plus tip for a “good time” Saturday night at the JW Marriott hotel.

Once at the hotel, Hinkle, in perhaps not the brightest move, reportedly showed his official ID to the male prostitute. Shortly thereafter Gibson, whose ad said he was seeing a “sugga daddy,” had a change of heart and called his sister, Megan, from the hotel suite’s bathroom to come and pick him up. That’s when Hinkle allegedly tried to prevent Gibson from leaving.

Now here’s where it gets really weird. Gibson claims the lawmaker then grabbed him in the buttocks, exposed himself and later offered him a bribe of an iPad, BlackBerry and $100 cash to keep quiet.

ACORN: helping exploit underage sex slaves

In 2009, conservative activists exposed ACORN with this video, in which members of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now offered their help in providing tax tips on how to pimp out what they are told are underage prostitutes smuggled into the US from Central America.

The exposure of these videos got ACORN's US federal funding revoked.





And they were involved in election fraud:




ACORN operates in Canada too. According to their website, "ACORN Canada is an independent national organization in Canada, but we draw on the proud history and tradition of ACORN USA (acorn.org)."
