More bad news for Ford Haters

Rob Ford was not the target in Project Traveller.

He wasn’t even a target.

The Toronto mayor is a footnote to this investigation from a police perspective.

Toronto Police launched the project about a year ago. The controversy involving Ford came much later.

Police listening in on wiretaps never heard Ford speak.

What they heard was people they were targeting talk about Ford.

While the city remains transfixed on the possibility police have recovered the video allegedly showing Ford smoking crack — which Ford has denied doing — Project Traveller started like any other for the Gun and Gang Task Force.

 It had nothing to do with Ford, but with combating drugs, guns and violence

TORONTO – Calling to an end an elaborate three-year undercover operation, Toronto police chief Bill Blair announced today that special agent Rob Ford has uncovered a major drug ring in the city's west end. 

"We set up a phony football charity and gave him the alias 'The Mayor'," said Blair. "At times it seemed that Ford believed the story himself. He is truly among our best operatives."

Rob Ford on crack is still better for Toronto than his "sober" spendthrift opponents

Property taxes skyrocketing, unions dominating city spending, introductions of new taxes disguised as user fees, like a new garbage-pick up fee, complete capitulation to a civic union after a lengthy garbage strike, imposition of dictates on how neighbourhoods should be from city bureaucrats and politicians, inept wast of city funds, like the St. Clair streetcar fiasco, and total incompetence characterized the tenure of David Miller, Rob Ford's predecessor as mayor of Toronto.

In complete contrast, since becoming mayor, Rob Ford kept his promise of eliminating the Vehicle Transfer Tax, he reduced the amount of money individual City Councillors are allowed to spend on office expenses, he saved the city millions by outsourcing garbage pick up west of Yonge Street and knowing he would stand up to them, negotiated fair and reasonable contracts with civic unions.

And under Ford's stewardship, for the first time ever, the city's spending has flatlined.

His commitment to put taxpayers above special interests who rely on public-funded entitlements has made Ford plenty of enemies. The Toronto Star has been relentless in attacking the mayor, devoted unprecedented resources to defaming him and actually libeled Ford by falsely accusing him, based on hearsay,  of assaulting a high school football player. A charge that the student, once located, refuted himself. There hasn't been a week when the Star hasn't found some petty grievance that it tried to magnify into a mountain of disdain against Rob Ford.

And now it emerges that Rob Ford may have smoked crack cocaine.

Even if the charges are true, while expecting the mayor to seek help and conduct himself with more decorum in the future, the city is still far better off with Ford as mayor than it would be under any of his spendthrift opponents.

When Grover Cleveland, the former mayor of Buffalo and a man considered to be a thoroughly honest politician, was running against James G. Blaine for the US Presidency in the 19th Century, it was considered a scandal that Cleveland had fathered an illegitimate child. The Republican Blaine was a good family man who was widely believed to have accepted bribes while Speaker of the House of Representatives.

A newspaper editorial at the time said in effect that Cleveland was a disappointment as a family man while staying honorable in his role as a public servant, while Blaine was immaculate in his private dealings but thoroughly corrupt as a politician. The right thing to do therefore, was that the two should be consigned by the voters to the lives they led best - Cleveland to public life and Blaine back to private life. Grover Cleveland defeated won the election.

The analogy holds true of Ford. The man has never taken a cent in public funds in any way that could be deemed inappropriate. He is even famous for paying his office expenses from his own pocket rather than charging them to the taxpayers.

Lucia Corbella noted in The Calgary Herald that the hypocrisy exhibited by Ford's enemies regarding his alleged substance abuse is astounding:

"Funny how quickly, though, lefties who use that excuse for beautiful losers they admire, or for the downtrodden on their city streets, have abandoned their hackneyed mantra when a person they despise is a user."

The Toronto Star lavished praise on the unbalanced kleptomaniac MP Svend Robinson. But he had, in their eyes, the benefit of of being a member of the socialist New Democratic Party.

In the last municipal election, The Toronto Star endorsed George Smitherman, a drug-addict who was responsible for a billion dollars worth of wasted taxpayer funds. But he was a Liberal, so as far as the Star was concerned, he was just great.

Ford's Council opponents are incompetents who lavish public money on their special interest friends. To put them back in charge of the city's coffers would be disastrous for the taxpayers of Toronto.

While we want to get Ford to get of his crack, he spends other people's money responsibly. Whether sober or on drugs, leftist city councilors like Adam Vauhgan, Joe Mihevc, Janet Davis and Gord Perks spend tax dollars like crackheads who have just pulled off a successful home invasion.

And that's a type of addiction Toronto really can't afford.

"Ass-Gate" is an uncomfortable reminder that sometimes women do lie about sexual assault

Sexual assault is a horrible crime. It not only is a subjection of the victim to violence but of an invasion of dignity and of person in a way comparable to no other crime.

The perpetrators of this crime are reprehensible and deservedly become reviled by their communities..

Due to the personal and humiliating nature of the act, and because it often takes place without witnesses, the victims sometimes do not report the crime against them, fearing that not only will they not be able to prove their case, but will be demeaned a second time in the process of pursuing justice. In order to prevent this revictimization and to encourage complainants not to fear coming forward, it has become gospel for a number of fields which deal with this crime to unquestioningly accept the accounts of those claiming to have been sexually violated.

Operating from the standpoint of complete credulity is part of the training for social workers, counsellors, and those in the medical profession. The exceptions are the police and courts, which require actual evidence of a crime having been committed in order to lay charges and secure a conviction.

And a good thing that those in the position to inflict the most harm on a person's life and freedom are still subject to some measure of standards that protect an innocent person who has been falsely accused.

Because one of the sad facts of life that Social Workers are trained to ignore is that sometimes, and more often than any of us would like to believe, women do make false and malicious accusations of sexual assault.

It happens so frequently in Family Court by women hoping to leverage their cases that judges often won't take such a charge seriously unless there are police charges or a conviction to back them up.

Unfortunate as it is, there are unscrupulous women who make these charges out of sheer vindictiveness or mental instability, or other reasons of personal gain.

Which brings us to the "ass-gate" scandal that has emerged when Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was accused by a political rival of having fondled her buttocks at a fundraiser last week, a charge he categorically and vigorously denies.

No one, other than Sarah Thomson, who claims to have had her posterior groped, and Rob Ford likely will ever  know with total certainty what happened. Still, that hasn't stopped battle lines from being drawn and people choosing sides based mainly, not on what the facts show happened but on their political sympathies with the respective parties involved.

There have been a couple fatuous articles, tweeted by Thomson's fellow failed provincial Liberal candidate Bernie Farber, one by Ivor Tossell at Macleans and the other by the girlfriend of Liberal Party strategist Warren Kinsella, which essentially make the same disingenuous points that pretend to take no position while implicitly convicting Ford.

In essence, they wrote that we don't know what happened but they don't like Ford, that sort of groping happens to women in politics all the time, and we should take Sarah Thomson at her word.

The problem with the people who have convicted Ford based solely on Thomson`s allegations and their own disdain for Toronto's fiscally conservative mayor is that none of it adds up.

Yes, as Thomson reminded her coterie of admirers, Ford has done some embarrassing things in the past about which he lied and only admitted them when confronted by a number of witnesses.

But this time, witnesses are coming forward to back Ford and say it is Thomson who is the liar.

While most sexual assaults take place where only the perpetrator and the victim are there and may be difficult to prove, Ford`s alleged groping of Thomson was said to have occurred in the middle of a party, with the two of them surrounded by people.

One person who witnessed their exchange said Thomson is lying. Two others said that she informed them in advance she was planning to `set up` Toronto`s mayor and use it against him in her own future campaign.

Thomson has had an ax to grind with Ford since her pathetic mayoral campaign and while bemoaning how her credibility is now being attacked, it begs the question, what credibility?.

One can also legitimately wonder why, when surrounded by people, if Ford did fondle her rear, why Thomson wouldn`t simply have said `get your hand off my ass!` then and there and be able to establish what had happened. By all accounts, she was smiling and joking with Ford during what she later claimed was a sexual assault, which would be a bizarre reaction if she were telling the truth.

Instead, Thomson who seems desperate for the limelight, made her accusations via her facebook page and then has fluttered from one media outlet to the next, talking to just about everyone that would give her airtime. In some cases, making multiple appearances.

As to Thomson versus Ford`s credibility, by the accounts of everyone who knows him, the sexual groping Thomson accuses him of would be both unprecedented and totally out of character for him.

Thomson, on the other hand, is someone with a history both of being sleazy for political advantage and of changing her stories when it suited her. She abused the system during her provincial campaign and she tried to expunge her scathing remarks about one-time rival George Smitherman when she did an about-face to endorse his mayoral campaign against Ford.  Thomson changing her story from day to day and interview to interview isn`t helping to make her more believable either.

Indeed no one does know beyond all doubt what happened between Ford and Thomson. But unlike her Liberal party colleagues, I am willing to take Ford, and the two Richmond Hill Counsellors and the witness who saw the interaction between the Women`s Post publisher and the mayor at their word. On the other hand, Thomson is increasingly sounding like someone who got caught in a lie from which she can't extricate herself without loosing face.

Throughout this sideshow, Thomson appears to be grotesquely trying to position herself as some sort of `role-model` for women. It would be sad for Canada`s women if she was whom they had to resort to for a role model. Fortunately, Canadian women can do a lot better.

You have to have done a lot of drugs to lose track of what you've taken. Perhaps the lasting affect was more than anyone realized until now.

The New Nexus of Narcoterrorism: Hezbollah & Venezuela

"..A recent New York Times front-page article (December 14, 2011) revealed the extensive and intricate connections between Hezbollah and South American cocaine trafficking. Far from being the passive beneficiaries of drug-trafficking expats and sympathizers, Hezbollah has high-level officials directly involved in the South American cocaine trade and its most violent cartels, including the Mexican gang Los Zetas. The “Party of God’s” increasing foothold in the cocaine trade is facilitated by an enormous Lebanese diaspora. As I wrote in my May 2011 e-note, in 2005, six million Muslims were estimated to inhabit Latin American cities. However, ungoverned areas, primarily in the Amazon regions of Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil, present easily exploitable terrain over which to move people and material. The Free Trade Zones of Iquique, Chile; Maicao, Colombia; and Colón, Panama, can generate undetected financial and logistical support for terrorist groups. Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru offer cocaine as a lucrative source of income. In addition, Cuba and Venezuela have cooperative agreements with Syria, Libya, and Iran.

Some shocking revelations into the global interconnectedness of Latin American governments and Middle Eastern terrorist groups have come from Walid Makled, Venezuela’s latter-day Pablo Escobar, who was arrested on August 19, 2010 in Cúcuta, a town on the Venezuelan-Colombian border. A Venezuelan of Syrian descent known variously as “El Turco” (“The Turk”) or “El Arabe” (“The Arab”), he is allegedly responsible for smuggling 10 tons of cocaine a month into the US and Europe—a full 10 percent of the world’s supply and 60 percent of Europe’s supply. His massive infrastructure and distribution network make this entirely plausible, as well as entirely implausible the Venezuelan government did not know. Makled owned Venezuela’s biggest airline, Aeropostal, huge warehouses in Venezuela’s biggest port, Puerto Cabello, and bought enormous quantities of urea (used in cocaine processing) from a government-owned chemical company.

After his arrest and incarceration in the Colombian prison La Picota, Makled gave numerous interviews to various media outlets. When asked on camera by a Univisión television reporter whether he had any relation to the FARC, he answered: “That is what I would say to the American prosecutor.” Asked directly whether he knew of Hezbollah operations in Venezuela, he answered: "In Venezuela? Of course! That which I understand is that they work in Venezuela. [Hezbollah] make money and all of that money they send to the Middle East."

Between Last Call, Daniel Okrent's best-selling 2010 book, leading clothing designers taking inspiration from jazz age fashion, a new prime-time documentary by Ken Burns, and the new, second season of HBOs critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire, it's impossible to ignore the new interest in Prohibition. With a fixation on "classic cocktails" and faux-speakeasies, even drinking culture itself seems to be bellying up to the bar.

What's fueling this fascination and where will it end? Reason.tv talks with filmmaker Burns, author Okrent, and drug policy activist Aaron Houston of Students for Sensible Policy, who argues that "Culture and art right now are reflective of a general sentiment in this society that the war on drugs has not worked."

And that change is in air. Marijuana legalization initiatives will be on the ballot in at least two states in 2012, Reps. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Barney Frank (D-Mass.) have introduced legislation to let states decide pot's legal status, and record high levels of Americans are in favor of legalization.

Charlie Sheen says he's clean of drugs and alcohol, but high on himself.  

"I am on a drug. It's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available because if you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body," the embattled "Two and a Half Men" star said in an interview with ABC News.  

"I woke up and decided, you know, I've been kicked around. I've been criticized. I've been like the, 'Ah, shucks' guy with like this bitchin' rockstar life. And I'm just finally going to completely embrace it, wrap both arms around it, and love it violently. And defend it violently through violent hatred."

US Drug Enforcement Administration accuses Lebanese Canadian Bank of Laundering Hezbollah Drug Money

The Lebanese Canadian Bank SAL facilitated money laundering by an international drug- trafficking network and has ties to the terrorist organization Hezbollah, according to the U.S.

The Beirut, Lebanon-based bank, through management complicity and failure of its internal controls, has been used “extensively” by people associated with the network to move as much as $200 million a month in proceeds from illicit drug deals, according to a Treasury Department statement today. The department filed a notice proposing banning U.S. financial institutions from opening or maintaining certain accounts for the closely held bank, known as LCB.

The U.S. today designated the bank as being of “primary money laundering concern,” bringing its conduct to the attention of the financial community and limiting its ability to be used for criminal purposes, according to the Treasury Department. 

The U.S. is seeking “to protect the U.S. financial system from the illicit proceeds flowing through LCB and to deprive this international narcotics trafficking and money laundering network of its preferred access point into the formal financial system,” said Stuart Levey, the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, at a news conference in Washington.
