GM is so afraid of Tesla it has assembled a special team to keep an eye on the electric car company

As General Motors Co. Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson sees it, Tesla Motors Inc. has the potential to be a disruptive force to the automotive industry and he doesn’t want to be caught off guard.

The former telecommunication executive has assigned a small team to study billionaire industrialist Elon Musk’s upstart electric-car maker and how it might threaten the 104-year-old automaker’s business, Steve Girsky, GM vice chairman, said last week during an interview at Bloomberg headquarters in New York.

“He thinks Tesla could be a big disrupter if we’re not careful,” Girsky said. “History is littered with big companies that ignored innovation that was coming their way because you didn’t know where you could be disrupted.”

Alice Walker, on her personal blog, has weighed in on the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the charge of murdering Treyvon Martin.

As is usual for her, Walker has nothing intelligent to contribute.

However, some people evidently think that by virtue of her having written an acclaimed novel, Walker is a person whose opinion should be valued.

Those people are idiots.

Alice Walker is a person who has expressed support for the deranged mental case, David Icke, and his demented ravings about alien reptiles controlling the Earth.

She repeated her insane idiocy in her blog post about Treyvon Martin in which she wrote: "if we are dealing with descendants of the Chitauri (See Credo Mutwa's informative teaching on the subject of the subject of cold blooded reptilian ancestry of some humans) [Walker's parenthetical notation] then we can expect more of what we are experiencing."

Here's some background on what Walker is talking about:

They are a fictional race of extraterrestrial shapeshifters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics's alternative universe, Ultimate Marvel, in the limited series The Ultimates. They were created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch. 

They also made an appearance in the recent blockbuster movie The Avengers as the space aliens who were the overlords of Thor's brother Loki.

So get this straight. Alice Walker, the author of The Color Purple, thinks that some fictional creatures invented by Marvel Comics are controlling the Earth.

Alice Walker is quite obviously, in the most charitable terms, delusional.

And if you take her seriously, about anything, you are a moron.

It’s got to be a pretty good gig to be Paul Krugman. He’s rich enough to bitch to The New Yorker about not being able to afford a home in St. John so, sigh, St. Croix has to do. He’s got tenure at the second-best college in New Jersey, an equally secure gig at the second-best newspaper in New York, and he’s even copped a Nobel Prize (economics, but still). He’s asked for his opinion on pop bands in a way that I’m pretty sure Milton Friedman or John Kenneth Galbraith never experienced (thank god for small favors). “The New Pornographers are probably technically better than Arcade Fire,” he’s solemnly sworn to Playboy. “But what the hell? It’s all good.”

The man also known as Krugtron the Invincible is able to utter such fallacious conventional deep thoughts as “the Great Depression ended largely thanks to a guy named Adolf Hitler” and that the 9/11 attacks were just the ticket to goose the soft early-’00s economy in lower Manhattan (“All of a sudden, we need some new office buildings,” he actually wrote in the Times on September 14, 2001) and still be taken seriously.

Ex-immigration board judge appeals conviction on sex bribes

TORONTO - Kudos to each of the venerable judges on Ontario’s Court of Appeal for keeping a straight face. 

Steve Ellis, the disgraced former immigration board judge, is appealing his conviction and sentence for trying to extort sexual favours from a Korean refugee claimant in exchange for a positive ruling at her hearing. Despite a damning video of his smarmy proposition surreptitiously recorded by the woman’s boyfriend at a downtown coffee shop, his lawyer says Ellis should never have been convicted in the first place because he wasn’t after sex — just friendship.

Femen leader chosen as inspiration for French stamp - Islamic outrage ensues

Only two days after Femen movement leader Inna Shevchenko was chosen as one of the inspirations for France's new official stamp, the controversial Ukrainian activist, known for her topless protests has sparked an outcry on Twitter for a July 9 tweet where she slams the holy month of Ramadan and Islam. 

The tweet in question was discovered on July 16, a day after Shevchenko was chosen as the first foreign woman to represent the incarnation of Marianne, one of France's national emblems.

On July 9, Shevchenko tweeted: "What can be more stupid than Ramadan? What can be more uglier then [sic] this religion?"

Egypt tightens blockade of Gaza

In the last few weeks, the Egyptian Army has closed down smuggling tunnels from the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip, and has killed dozens of fighters from the terror group.

This is likely related to increased attempts by Iran to use their proxy group Hamas to inflame the situation in Egypt by arming the Muslim Brotherhood there.

Werner Cohn: The Menace of the Charlatan

We now have an excellent, up-to-date description of modern charlatanism, Paul Offit's Do You Believe in Magic?,  HarperCollins, 2013. 

The early chapters of the book give a rundown of some of the big names of 20th century charlatanism, among whom the name of Linus Pauling may be the most interesting.  After a most distinguished career in science, including a Nobel prize in chemistry, Pauling turned his back on science and began advocating cultic nostrums.  Apparently the turn occurred when he was 65 years old, in 1966,  and the reader is left wondering whether the cause was some sort of senescence.  Offit does not mention this, but Pauing gave an earlier indication of oddness, when he participated in  Communist fellow-travelling in 1948 by endorsing the Henry Wallace candidacy for President, and again a year later, when he participated in the Communisty-organized "Peace Conference" at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.
