According to a front-page article in today’s Toronto Star, Robert Ford uses the n-word a lot, and occasionally beats up his low-life friend Sandro Lisi. The Star’s source on this? An unnamed 20-year-old drug dealer. Welcome to the mayor whom libel law forgot.
It’s quite amazing, when you think of it. Other than Rob Ford stories, how many single-source hey-some-drug-dealer-told-me-this-happened scoops could your average Canadian reporter get past his editor or in-house libel lawyer?
But Ford is special — not just because stories linking him to racism and violent behaviour are consistent with his many past scandals; but also because the legal stakes are lower even if the story isn’t true...
